1968 Pop Song, Written in Three Days by a 19-Year-Old, Became an International Hit Ballad ...Saudi Arabia

Barry Ryan achieved one of his biggest successes with a pop song written by his twin brother, Paul, which became an international hit and is rumored to have helped the release of Queen’s biggest anthem.

Barry and Paul weren’t strangers to the entertainment business, as the sons of one of the biggest pop stars in England in the 1950s, Marion Ryan. Following in their mother’s footsteps, they signed with Decca Records and released a series of hits by the time they were 17 years old.

The pursuit of fame and their growing popularity took a major toll on Paul, who decided to step away from performing as a duo and do behind-the-scenes work. As a result, he became a songwriter and penned the track “Eloise” for his twin brother to sing.

“Eloise” was Barry’s first single as a solo act that ran over five minutes and dominated the international charts despite landing at No. 86 on the Billboard Hot 100. The baroque pop track landed at No. 1 in Europe, including Italy, Ireland, the UK, and Belgium. It even topped the charts in Asian countries like Singapore and Malaysia, while also finding success in Mexico and South Africa.

“I remember, before ‘Eloise’ we went to Richard Harris’ house to one of his mad parties and he played ‘MacArthur Park’ to me and Paul. He’d got a rough mix of it. I always remember Paul listening to it, Jason. I can always remember seeing his face. I could see something on his face and he was thinking “I’ve got to do something like this.” He just loved it,” said Barry to The Stranger Brew.

“He actually locked himself away and wrote ‘Eloise’. He really did close the door of the room and write it. It took him about three days and he came out and he played it to me and I thought ‘what’s this? You can’t have a slow bit, a fast bit, five minutes. No-one’s going to play this Paul…’ Paul was absolutely right. We tagged it onto the end of a session that Paul and I did with mum actually.”

Barry recalls the recording session as something spectacular, as the session musicians included future rock icons, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones. When they finished recording the string section, the musicians actually kept their bows, something Barry had never seen happen before, as “it was always looking at their watch and getting out there quick.” They instantly knew they had a hit on their hands.

“Eloise” gained some infamy for its original 5-minute runtime, which Barry said was used as an argument by Freddie Mercury to get the label to release “Bohemian Rhapsody.” He recalls Mercury’s memoir describing how he told the label, “That Barry Ryan had a big five-and-a-half-minute hit. Why can’t we do it too?”

Barry was convinced that their label “basically wrecked” the possibility of “Eloise” being a hit in the U.S. because they cut it to two and a half minutes.
