ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Lilac Manor Rehabilitation and Nursing has taken in nearly a third of the residents from Waterview Heights, which was supposed to close Tuesday, but still has 11 residents remaining.
Only nine nursing homes in Monroe County agreed to accept Waterview residents, sparing many from being moved far away. Lilac Manor, a one-star facility, has accepted about 50 Waterview residents, but some employees and residents have raised concerns about staffing and care.
Some families have told us it’s better than Waterview, but others complain about short staffing. One resident said they “sat in a wet diaper for six hours.”
Robert Williams, who works in Lilac Manor’s kitchen, said he was surprised by the number of new residents.
“No I wasn’t expecting them to open up the seventh floor. It was never a seventh floor,” Williams said.
He said the previously unused seventh floor is now filled with former Waterview residents. Williams also said the workload has increased significantly.
Staffing at Lilac Manor
Public records show 70% of the facility’s nurses left in the last year, compared to the state average of 40%. Williams blamed low pay for the high turnover.
“Now if the wages were comparable, and comparable to our other 1199 places,” Williams said, referring to the 1199 SEIU healthcare workers union.
Lilac Manor’s current job posting lists certified nursing assistant starting pay at $19.71 per hour, which amounts to just over $2,865 per month for a 40-hour workweek.
CNA starting pay elsewhere
At the Jewish Home, a five-star facility, CNAs start at $20.19 per hour, grossing just over $3,230 per month, a difference of about $365.
“Can you please treat people with respect… when I say respect I mean monetarily,” Williams said.
While Lilac Manor’s pay is lower than some five-star facilities, it is similar to what many area nursing homes offer. Leaders at Lilac Manor pointed to new management and improvements made at the facility, saying fewer than 30% of nurses left this year and expressing confidence in turning around the one-star rating.
Multiple sources confirmed they are close to finding new homes for the remaining Waterview residents, and the facility could close by the end of this week.
