Thrillers are among the most popular literary genres, as the novels’ twists and turns make for a gripping read. The publication Collider recently spotlighted some of the most acclaimed thrillers by releasing a ranking titled “6 Thriller Books That Are Perfectly Written.”
The list, published on October 12, included novels like 1955’s The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith, The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris, released in 1988, and Gillian Flynn‘s 2012 hit, Gone Girl. According to Collider, the most “perfectly written” thriller is 1971’s The Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth, who died in 2025 at the age of 86.
The book, which received the 1972 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Novel and the 1972 Martin Beck Award, has a score of 4.27 out of 5 from 149,899 readers on Goodreads. The Day of the Jackal was adapted into the 1973 film, directed by Fred Zinnemann, which has a score of 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. In 2024, Sky Atlantic released the first season of The Day of the Jackal television series, starring Eddie Redmayne as The Jackal.
During a 2024 interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Redmayne shared that he and his father, Richard Redmayne, were fans of the 1973 film. “So I grew up watching the original movie with Edward Fox, who is sort of ingenious. There was something just so elegant and old school and kind of analog about it, and yet it was the genre that I was completely into,” said the 44-year-old Oscar-winner during the 2024 interview.
Redmayne said that while his first instinct was to stay away from the project, he appreciated that the show modernized the original story.
“What the guys had done is, they had sort of re-created it or moved it to now, and it retained all of that kind of original DNA, but it was new and fresh. And so I decided to do it,” explained Redmayne.
Redmayne also said his father put some pressure on him about playing The Jackal.
“My dad was like, ‘I’m thrilled you’re doing it. Don’t f–k it up,'” recalled Redmayne with a laugh.
