ALBANY, N.Y. — More than 130 colleges and universities in New York State are waiving application fees for high school seniors this fall.
For the fourth straight year, students can apply for free to SUNY, CUNY, and more than 45 participating private colleges. This year, the application period has been extended into November.
The free application period for SUNY schools runs from Oct. 19 through Nov. 2. For students who didn’t attend a New York City public school, the application period for CUNY schools runs from Oct. 15 through Nov. 16. You can find a list of participating private colleges and see their application period here.
The program is part of the state’s annual College Application Initiative. College application fees can range from $50 to $90, which can add up for students applying to multiple colleges. Last year, more than 300,000 college applications were submitted for free, which the state says has saved families more than $15 million.
More than 700 high schools across the state are registered to participate in the free application program. Those schools will dedicate counselor support and other resources to guide seniors through the application process.
