Late Goals, Struggles Versus 10 Men, Unable to Hold a Lead: Do Man Utd Have a Mentality Problem? ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

Manchester United once again failed to make the most of their opposition having a man sent off on Saturday, but that’s not the only reason some critics might question their mentality.

It hadn’t been pretty, but Manchester United were practically there; just their second win of the Premier League season was within touching distance as they entered the final 10 minutes of regulation time against Tottenham 1-0 up and with a man advantage at Old Trafford.

Dominic Solanke during his intimate embrace/wrestling bout with Lisandro Martínez, and Tottenham – deservedly, it should be emphasised – equalised to ultimately earn a 1-1 draw.

Tottenham were comfortably the better team over the course of the 90 minutes, to the point where even a win for United wouldn’t have earned them or Carrick that much credit. Spurs went into the game bottom of the table but played their hosts off the park at times, especially during the first 30 minutes.

The outcome produced two especially damning facts for United.

Firstly, it was the third successive occasion on which they’d failed to beat a team who started the day bottom of the table, having also drawn 1-1 with Fulham prior to the international break and with Wolves in December 2025.

Then, it was also the third time in a row that they’d failed to defeat opposition who’d been reduced to 10 men, the other occasions being at home to City last month (1-0 loss) and at Newcastle in March (2-1 loss).

Considering those facts, it’s perfectly understandable that United’s mentality might be called into question. All are instances where they would be favourites to win, even accounting for City being a very, very good team who benefited from a goal that shouldn’t have stood.

Aside from the aforementioned controversy surrounding Erling Haaland’s goal, there aren’t really any redeeming factors from the six games noted.

In December’s 1-1 draw with rock-bottom Wolves at Old Trafford, United were desperately poor, generating just 0.84 xG to their visitors’ 1.16. And this was a Wolves side who finished 2025 with the worst points-per-game ratio (0.76) over a full year of Premier League football since 2018 (Huddersfield Town – 0.62).

In the loss to 10-man Newcastle, the Red Devils had the whole second half with an extra man. But even then, the two best chances of the second period fell to Newcastle, and neither of them even resulted in a goal.

And the draw with Fulham last month; sure, United were unfortunate to trail to Martínez’s own goal, but they were also very lucky to earn a point via
