A joint venture between China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and Abu Dhabi-based Tristar Engineering & Construction has secured a US $2.7bn contract for the substructure works of the West Terminal at Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport.
The 7-level West Terminal is the second of 3 planned terminals at the airport. Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP) said the award marks the transition of the first phase of the airport’s US $35bn expansion into its main construction stage.
Spanning 800,000sqm, the terminal is designed to accommodate 45m passengers annually once completed, creating a pipeline of upcoming contracts for airlines, concessionaires and airport suppliers.
The terminal will be connected to the airside through an automated people-mover system, which is planned to have 14 stations at full build-out.
Earlier this year, DAEP awarded an estimated $1.5bn contract for the people-mover system to a joint venture between Mitsubishi Corporation and Larsen & Toubro. The contract covers 4 underground stations planned under the first phase of development.
Other contracts awarded so far include enabling works, construction of the second runway, initial structural foundations and concourse substructures, according to the report.
Further packages are expected to cover the terminal’s superstructure, the fourth concourse, baggage-handling systems, and facade and roofing works.
The latest award marks another step in the development of Al Maktoum International Airport, as Dubai advances plans to expand its aviation infrastructure and increase passenger-handling capacity.
