News by : (Parade) -

When you’re washing your hair and working your fingers through the tangles, do you ever get tempted to just cut it all off? We’ve all been there. Anyone who’s actually taken the plunge and gotten a pixie cut will likely tell you it’s a bit intimidating at first, but totally worth it. If you’re still not ready to get rid of all your length, you can get the best of both worlds with a longer pixie.

A long pixie cut may involve a bit more maintenance than longer hairstyles, but it can also be totally fabulous. Seeking some haircut inspiration for your next trip to the salon? Parade asked celebrity stylist Kenna Kennor to weigh in and share the seven best long pixie cuts for women of any age.

Kennor, who has styled the likes of Victoria Beckham, Lily Collins and Gigi Hadid, runs Kennaland, an award-winning salon in Brooklyn, New York. Here, he schools us on how to style a long pixie and offers tips for growing out a pixie cut. He also describes what makes this particular cut different from a classic pixie and gives us some handy tips for choosing the right pixie for your face shape.

What Makes a Long Pixie Different From a Classic Pixie

If you’ve ever heard of a lob (aka a long bob), you know bobs can come in different lengths. The same rule applies to pixie cuts.

“A long pixie still keeps that tapered perimeter, shorter through the sides and back, but the extra length on top changes everything. That length gives you room to play. You can push it forward, sweep it to the side, add texture or even wear it up,” Kennor says.

A classic pixie, on the other hand, is more of a “fixed statement,” but a long pixie is “far more versatile.”

“You get all the boldness of a pixie with a lot more styling freedom,” he tells Parade.

How To Choose a Long Pixie for Your Face Shape

“For me, pixies are really about that impish, face-framing quality. It’s a cut that draws attention to your features, so the whole game is deciding which features you want to highlight,” Kennor says. “If someone has striking eyes, for example, I might use a forward fringe and leave a little length in the sideburns to pull the focus in.”

A stylist can help find the best long pixie cuts based on your features, hair texture and hairline, but here are a few general tips for each face shape:

Oval: “You have the most flexibility of anyone. Almost any long pixie works, so this is your chance to play with fringe length and texture,” Kennor shares. Round: “Ask for some height up top and control at the sides. That lift elongates the face and stops the cut from widening it,” the stylist says. Square: “Go for softer edges and side-swept movement to soften a strong jaw rather than emphasize it,” Kennor says. Heart: “Consider a little weight near the jaw to balance a wider forehead and bring everything into proportion,” the stylist says. Long/oblong: “Avoid adding height on top. You want width and softness instead, so the face doesn’t read even longer,” he explains.

The 7 Best Long Pixie Cuts, According to a Celebrity Hairstylist

1. The textured, piecey long pixie

“This is the long pixie cut I reach for most: length on top, broken up into separate pieces so it moves and looks lived-in rather than styled. It’s forgiving and it suits almost everyone,” Kennor says.Pro styling tip: Work a small amount of pomade or paste through your hair with your fingers to keep strands separated.

2. The sideswept long pixie

Kennor says this “elegant” long pixie is “the easiest to dress up.” “It reads ‘red carpet’ but works just as well for day-to-day wear,” he says.Pro styling tip: Use a round brush with a little heat on the top section for all-day hold.

3. The long pixie with a fringe

“Adding fringe is how you make a pixie about the eyes. A longer, forward fringe frames the face and gives you something to play with as it grows,” Kennor says.Pro styling tip: To keep fringe soft and piecey, use a touch of texture spray.Related: Hair Thinning on a GLP-1? 4. The natural texture long pixie

Kennor says a long pixie is “stunning” on curly or coily hair.“You get all that shape and volume up top when you work with the texture instead of fighting it,” he tells Parade.Pro styling tip: To define and hydrate coils without weighing them down, try a lightweight curl cream.

5. The grown-out long pixie

If you’re seeking a “soft, slightly shaggy in-between length,” Kennor suggests giving this long pixie cut a try.“It’s perfect if you’re growing a short pixie out because it makes the awkward stage look completely intentional,” he says.Pro styling tip: On the day after washing hair, use texturizing spray for an effortless, undone finish.

6. The androgynous, sculptural long pixie

Kennor is fond of this “strong, architectural” take on the long pixie. “Hair is pushed back and up rather than soft and forward. It’s bold, and it’s all about attitude and structure,” he says.Pro styling tip: Blow dry the top, moving back and up, then set hair with a matte paste for sculpted hold.

7. The effortless, undone long pixie

Kennor describes this next pixie cut as “cool” and “low-maintenance. “It’s a little messy, a little imperfect and very modern. It’s great for anyone who doesn’t want to fuss with their haircut,” he says.Pro styling tip: Scrunch a light texture cream through towel-dried hair and let it air dry.Related: How To Transition to Gray Hair Without the Awkward ‘Skunk Stripe’ Phase, According to Celebrity Hairstylists

How To Get Through the Growing-Out Stage

Whether you’re transitioning from a short pixie into a long pixie or ditching your long pixie for a bob, there’s always a growing-out stage where your hair isn’t quite where you want it to be. Instead of fighting against this phase, Kennor encourages his clients to enjoy it.

“Be ready for the awkward bits and have fun with them. Play with hats, accessories and new textures while the shape shifts,” he says. “Honestly, if you’re scared of the growing-out phase, that might be a sign to wait because a pixie isn’t just one cut. It evolves every few weeks.”

Growing a short pixie into a long pixie: Kennor says this is the “more forgiving” direction. “The key is regular shape-ups so the sides and back stay tapered while the top gains length. Otherwise, it just reads shaggy. Keep talking to your stylist and adjust as it grows,” he says. Growing a long pixie into a bob or longer: This is the “tougher” option, according to Kennor. “The perimeter and the crown grow at different rates and it can feel uneven. This is where texture and product become your friends, and where a good stylist will ‘connect’ the layers as you go so it always looks deliberate rather than in-between,” he explains.

How To Style and Maintain a Long Pixie

Even though they have more length, long pixies need the same upkeep as short pixies.

“People assume the length buys them time, but it doesn’t. Because the perimeter grows out first, the silhouette changes quickly. The hair closest to the scalp pushes out fast, so you lose that clean shape sooner than you’d think,” Kennor tells Parade.

For this reason, it’s best to book an appointment at the salon every five to six weeks.

“Pixies are a commitment, but that’s exactly why they look so sharp when they’re maintained,” Kennor says.

For day-to-day styling, the stylist says a little product “goes a long way.”

“Use a paste or pomade for texture and separation on top, and a light touch at the sides to keep everything controlled. Work with your natural texture rather than against it, and don’t be afraid to change it up. The whole point of the length is that you can wear it forward, swept or up,” he explains.
