President Donald Trump will not attend Saturday’s Alabama football game against Georgia due to Hurricane Isaias.
Trump confirmed the cancellation Friday in a post on Truth Social, and the Tuscaloosa Police Department was told around 1:30 p.m. Friday the visit was off. He had previously said Wednesday that he would let the weather decide whether he would make the trip to Bryant-Denny Stadium.
“Based on the fact that a huge Hurricane/Storm is coming, it is important to have our wonderful First Responders, Law Enforcement, and others, focused on that Storm, and in no way be thinking about the safety, or presence, of the President of the United States, ME!” Trump said in his Truth Social post. “Therefore, I will miss that potentially unbelievable Game, Alabama vs. Georgia but, hopefully, the Game will go on despite the weather!”
Trump said he would visit both teams at a later date, and that he would go to Clarksville, Tennessee, on Saturday for a campaign rally instead. He first announced he would be at the game last week.
Tuscaloosa is currently under a tropical storm warning, with forecasts saying the worst of the storm is expected overnight Friday into Saturday morning, with winds of 25 to 35 mph and gusts up to 55 mph.
Meteorologist James Spann said Thursday that the storm should be north of Tuscaloosa by kickoff, leaving lingering clouds, an outside chance of a shower and winds under 15 mph. The game is still scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Bryant-Denny Stadium, and Alabama Athletics has said it has no plans to move the kickoff.
The cancellation will remove the Secret Service staffing, road closures and extra stadium security that a presidential visit would have brought to campus. Trump was last at Bryant-Denny for Alabama’s 2024 game against Georgia, and he attended Texas-Tennessee in Knoxville on Sept. 26.
The storm is still changing game day plans, as ESPN moved “College GameDay” indoors to Coleman Coliseum, with doors opening at 5:30 a.m. Alabama officials also prohibited tailgating on campus before noon Saturday, and only uncovered tailgating will be allowed afterward.
Hurricane Isaias strengthened to a Category 3 storm Friday, with landfall expected along the Gulf Coast late Friday or early Saturday.
