Mackie’s death certificate, obtained by Us Weekly, lists a subarachnoid hemorrhage and blunt head trauma as the immediate causes of his death. According to the records, Mackie suffered a fall and sustained an injury on Sept. 11, three days before he died on Sept. 14.
The incident occurred at the home of Joseph McFate, Mackie’s longtime design director, where the designer had been staying in a guest house. A representative for Mackie confirmed the circumstances surrounding the fall to Us Weekly, noting that a healthcare professional was with him when it happened.
“For clarification, Mr. Mackie was staying in the guest house at the home of his longtime Design Director, Joe McFate,” the representative said.
“A healthcare professional was with him when he fell. He was also suffering from pneumonia both before and after his hospitalization.”
Mackie’s death was initially reported as being caused by pneumonia.
He died at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, California. He was 87.
The designer was known for his extravagant, glittering costumes and decades of work dressing some of entertainment’s biggest stars. His career included a celebrated creative partnership with Cher, whose unforgettable looks helped make his designs instantly recognizable. He also created costumes for The Carol Burnett Show and dressed performers including Diana Ross, Tina Turner and Elton John.
Following Mackie’s death, Cher paid tribute to her longtime friend on social media, writing, “My dear Bob has gone up to heaven,” before adding that she imagined him bringing his sequins, beads and sketch pad with him.
