The first four Avalanche games have been packed with excitement. Three blowout wins and a close regulation loss — I’d say they’re off to an impressive start.
A shortened training camp and exhibition didn’t affect them. In fact, it seemed to favor them. They’ve scored 23 goals right out of the gate.

Nathan MacKinnon nearly had a Gordie Howe hat trick in the season opener. He scored two goals and dropped gloves with Los Angeles Kings defenseman Brandt Clarke. It started with Clarke’s hit on Cale Makar, and a word Clarke said to MacKinnon that set him off.

To no surprise, his teammates agreed he is not a guy they would want to piss off. MacKinnon is just as intense in throwing hands as he is in using them to score lots of goals.
And not claiming to be clairvoyant or anything, but I predicted Martin Necas’ goal (even though he had two) before the 6-1 blowout over the St. Louis Blues. I made him laugh after morning skate and just had a feeling, so I may be a good luck omen? We’ll see if my magic touch strikes again.

The Avs’ bottom six has been on fire with 19 points over four games. Nicolas Roy scored goals in the first two games and also had an assist for three points. He said he has been working on his shot and is doing more yoga to improve his flexibility. The changes seem to be helping.
Zachary L’Heureux has come as advertised. He’s got grit and a fire that fit the fourth line. He missed a Gordie Howe hatty by a goal in the win over Calgary, but earned his first NHL point.
Blackwood starts on a strong note, new guys adjusting well
Mackenzie Blackwood came into training camp leaner, stronger and beefier. He didn’t change his diet or training. He said he’s just eating better and keeping good habits.
Another thing he didn’t change is that he doesn’t wear socks with his skates. He has thin ankle sleeves that cover his ankle and heel, but that’s it.
This team has fun together. New guys are fitting in quickly, and there have been lots of laughs and smiles on and off the ice. And it helps to have a cool coach like Jared Bednar to make practice fun. That’s the chemistry of a winning team.

Speaking of new players, I wrote a piece on Jaden Schwartz after the Avs signed him. And so far, he has proven to be what GM Joe Sakic said he would be and how I envisioned him fitting into the team.
