Mick Jagger, Keith Richards Share a Duet With Late Charlie Watts on Drums ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Some voices belong together even when they rarely share a song. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have written side by side for more than six decades, yet hearing them trade vocals on a single Rolling Stones song remains uncommon. A newly released track gives fans exactly that, with a familiar hand keeping time behind them.

“Bad Luck Hideaway,” a duet between Jagger and Richards, arrived on streaming services on Oct. 1. The band says the recording features drums from Charlie Watts, captured during sessions at British Grove Studios in London. Watts died in August 2021 at age 80.

The song is not entirely new to devoted listeners. It first surfaced on July 10 as a bonus track on a digital edition of the band’s album Foreign Tongues, available only as a paid download. That limited its reach. The October release pairs it with the single “Mr Charm,” where it’s a sort of B-side, and puts it in front of the wider streaming audience for the first time.

Jagger and Richards are credited as the songwriters, and the two exchange lines throughout. Stones albums typically hand Richards a song of his own to sing, which makes a shared lead unusual. Early listeners have described the track as roots-oriented, with acoustic and country-folk touches that contrast with the harder-edged material on the album. Andrew Watt, who produced both Foreign Tongues and 2023’s Hackney Diamonds, produced the song.

Watts’ presence on new Stones music has been a recurring thread since his death. Hackney Diamonds included his drumming on two songs, “Mess It Up” and “Live by the Sword.” On Foreign Tongues, most of the drumming came from Steve Jordan, the longtime Richards collaborator who took over the seat, while Watts appeared on the album track “Hit Me in the Head.”

Jagger signaled over the summer that more was coming. “We had a good track with Charlie and we’ve got other tracks with Charlie,” he told Billboard. “I keep reading this is Charlie’s final appearance. Well, we’ve got other tracks with Charlie.”

Richards spoke about the transition in the same interview. “It’s a hell of a thing to lose Charlie Watts,” he said, adding that Watts had endorsed his successor himself: “Charlie Watts said, ‘If I’m not there, put Steve in.’ So we were sort of under orders.”

The release extends a long rollout for Foreign Tongues, a 14-track album that came out less than three years after Hackney Diamonds. The “Mr Charm” video, directed by Henry Scholfield and starring Alexander Skarsgård, arrived the same day.

No tour dates have been announced. For now, the catalog has one more recording with Jagger, Richards and Watts on it, and it is available to anyone who wants to hear it.
