Ovrkast. has had himself quite the year.
The Oakland rapper and producer not only found himself on another Drake album, with a production credit on Iceman standout “Make Em Pay” (he produced a couple tracks on For All the Dogs Scary Hours Edition), he has also gotten himself in a legal beef over his stage name with the legendary rap group Outkast. He wasn’t able to talk about it with me during our convo about his sophomore album, but he did release a statement via Rolling Stone saying that it was never his intention to cause confusion, and hopes that both parties can find a resolution.
It’s a testament to having a higher profile. You know the saying made famous by The Notorious B.I.G. — who also had to deal with a legal situation involving his name — “Mo’ money, mo’ problems.”
Ovrkast. dropped his critically acclaimed debut album While the Iron Is Hot in May of 2025, and has now followed that up with STRIKING — which is an obvious play on words, but is also a nod to his “STRIKE” series, where he and another artist perform an original song together on his social media channels. Both projects were fully produced by himself, however, the one we’re here to breakdown today involves a lot more live instrumentation than its predecessor.
“I wanted to impress myself,” he said when explaining why he wanted to incorporate live instruments this go round. “So. I went and got everybody I knew who played instruments and tried to get them to work on this thing with me. And then it was really the arrangement part that was the hardest to figure out. Some of these songs took months to arrange. I was just trying to impress myself with the rapping, the mixing and the arranging.”
When he came through the Billboard offices in New York City to let us listen to the album, he hit play and didn’t talk until the album was finished — because that’s how he wants listeners to experience it. I know it’s hard not to skip around with the way streaming is set up, but the best way to listen to a full work like an album is to treat it as such. Just hit play and let it ride.
