Antonelli struggling to understand ‘unpredictable’ W17 package ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Kimi Antonelli has admitted he is struggling to make sense of Mercedes’ latest W17 upgrade in Singapore, raising fresh concerns about the championship leader’s prospects after a disappointing seventh place in Friday’s Sprint Qualifying.

The Italian arrived at Marina Bay with high hopes, but his first day of running has instead exposed a worrying lack of confidence in a car he describes as unpredictable and difficult to extract performance from.

Worse still, team-mate George Russell has looked considerably more comfortable with Mercedes’ older specification, topping the only practice session before securing second on the sprint grid.

The contrast leaves Antonelli facing an uncomfortable question: can Mercedes find the missing pace before the weekend slips further away?

Mercedes’ upgrade gamble backfires

The Silver Arrows opted for a split-specification approach in Singapore after the performance of its latest updates proved inconclusive at Sepang. Russell reverted to the Azerbaijan-specification W17, while Antonelli retained the upgraded package introduced at the previous round.

Russell's impending grid penalty, triggered by an engine change, added another consideration to the team's decision-making. Yet the opening day has done little to validate the newer package, with Russell consistently ahead while Antonelli has finished seventh in both sessions.

Asked whether he was surprised by how difficult it had been to extract lap time from the upgraded car, Antonelli offered a candid assessment of his predicament.

“Yes and no, to be fair. Already (in) FP1 I was struggling and, yeah, still a lot to understand about this package.

“The car is very difficult, very unpredictable and very difficult to put a lap together. So yeah, it's a shame because I was coming (here) with high hopes, but so far it's been very difficult."

For a driver leading the championship, the admission is hardly reassuring. Antonelli is not simply searching for a few tenths; he is still trying to understand the behaviour of a car that has so far refused to deliver the consistency he needs around Singapore's unforgiving street circuit.

Seven-tenths deficit leaves Antonelli searching

The scale of the challenge became particularly apparent in Sprint Qualifying. While Russell secured a front-row start behind Max Verstappen, Antonelli finished seventh, 0.693 seconds off the Red Bull driver's benchmark and behind both Ferraris and McLarens.

With limited practice time on a sprint weekend, Mercedes has little opportunity to conduct an extensive investigation before the next competitive session. Antonelli knows the deficit will be difficult to erase without a significant breakthrough overnight.

“I think it's going to be a difficult weekend, unless we can pull something out tomorrow,” he explained.

“But other than that, it's going to be very tricky. I don't really see where we can find seven tenths, but you never know.

“Maybe tonight, Bono(Pete Bonnington, Antonelli’s race engineer), the engineers, we're going to find something in the car. And for sure, I'm going to try to improve a little bit the driving, and then we'll see tomorrow where we end up.”

That final qualification offers Mercedes a glimmer of hope, but Antonelli's comments underline the uncertainty surrounding its latest development.

Russell's pace on the older specification provides the team with a valuable reference point. Whether engineers can translate that information into meaningful gains for Antonelli remains unclear.

For now, the championship leader is left searching for answers, with his upgraded W17 proving a far less cooperative partner than he had anticipated.
