NEWARK, N.Y. — A 40-year-old man who Newark Police say has been arrested 20 times is facing new charges.
On Thursday at around 12:30 p.m., police say they got a report of an attempted burglary in progress at the vacant IEC building on Norton Street in Newark.
Police got there and say they saw Joseph Palma coming from the side of the IEC building. They say they tried talking to Palma, but he fled on foot.
After a brief foot chase, police apprehended Palma. Police say during the chase, one of the two officers suffered injuries to both hands.
Through investigations, police say they learned Palma and another unidentified man tried to get into the IEC building.
The other man was stopped by police on the other side of the IEC building. Police say they don’t know if he was involved, but he was detained and found to have warrants out of Rochester and Irondequoit.
Police say they won’t be releasing his name, as he wasn’t charged in connection to the burglary.
Palma was charged with attempted burglary, assault, possession of burglar’s tools, obstructing governmental administration, and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Police say Palma has an “extensive” criminal history. According to police, he’s been arrested 20 times, five of which they say were felonies. They say he’s been arrested in Monroe, Wayne, Livingston, Allegany, and Steuben Counties. Police also say he has six open cases.
Palma was processed at the Newark police station and brought to the Wayne County Jail.
According to police, Palma’s arrest was made possible by community members who called them after seeing something suspicious.
