Nearly three decades after Wynonna Judd paid tribute to Tammy Wynette with her own rendition of one of the country legend’s hits, she is returning to the song once again.
Parade has an exclusive first look at Judd performing “Woman to Woman” during Great Performances – Tammy Wynette: Forever Yours, the star-studded tribute premiering Friday, Oct. 23, at 9 p.m. ET on PBS.
In the exclusive preview clip, Judd takes the stage to perform the song Wynette originally released more than 50 years ago.
“Woman to Woman,” written by Billy Sherrill, was released by Wynette in July 1974 as the only single from her album of the same name.
The song finds Wynette delivering a warning from one woman to another about taking a man’s devotion for granted. It became another major country hit for Wynette, reaching No. 4 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart and No. 1 on Canada’s country chart.
But Judd’s connection to “Woman to Woman” goes back much further than the new PBS special.
In 1998, she recorded her own version for Tammy Wynette Remembered, a tribute album released following Wynette’s death that year at age 55.
Judd’s rendition was also released as a single and reached No. 62 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart.
Now, 28 years later, Judd is revisiting “Woman to Woman” as part of another celebration of Wynette’s life, music and influence.
Tammy Wynette: Forever Yours was recorded at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium in March and features an extensive lineup of artists performing songs associated with the country legend.
Wynette’s daughter Georgette Jones introduces the special and also performs, while the lineup includes Judd, Gretchen Wilson, Lorrie Morgan, Ann Wilson, Terri Clark, Kimberly Perry, The War and Treaty, K.T. Tunstall, Mandy Barnett, Jamie O’Neal, Brittney Spencer and more.
Wynette, who became known as the “First Lady of Country Music,” scored a long list of enduring hits during her career, including “Stand by Your Man,” “D-I-V-O-R-C-E,” “I Don’t Wanna Play House” and “Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad.”
She died in 1998 at age 55.
More than five decades after Wynette first released “Woman to Woman,” Judd’s performance brings the song back to the stage while also revisiting a recording from her own past.
Great Performances – Tammy Wynette: Forever Yours premieres Friday, Oct. 23, at 9 p.m. ET on PBS and will also be available to stream on the PBS app and PBS website.
