ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester City School District (RCSD) has opened a new Parent Center at the Loretta Johnson Middle School campus on Genesee Street.
The Parent Center opened its doors on Sept. 25 with the goal of giving families one place to turn for help, instead of having to figure out which department or office in the district can help them. “So this, vision of a parent center has been around for a long time in Rochester, but the idea was to open up a building, if you will, that provides resources for families and different avenues,” Jamie Wilson, chief of staff for the RCSD, said.
Wilson said the new Parent Center brings together district staff, community partners and other resources under one roof. That includes a food pantry, clothing closets for both students and parents, and a one-on-one resource station.
“We understand that teachers are in the classroom and they’re instructing, but they need support as well. And so we work as a collective, as a whole, as a district to ensure that our families have their needs supported, and our students are strongly supported in the classroom, and they have resources to encourage them to continue coming to school,” Wilson said.
The Parent Center was part of the district’s $1.16 billion budget for the 2026-27 school year. Wilson said the focus is on making sure the model works and can be replicated.
“So what I want to say is that we’re definitely being fiscally responsible. And so as I mentioned before, this space already existed and was vacant for quite some time. So the cost to get the, the parent center up and running was minimal. And what we want to do is maximize this space, to support as many families as possible,” Wilson said.
Wilson said the district will measure the center’s success by looking at city and county data about food insecurities and by collecting surveys from families. “We look at city data. We look at county data about food insecurities to ensure that we’re doing our part here at the district level…Another need is perception how to families feel. Do they feel welcomed? We do that by survey collection. So we look at how do you feel coming in at the beginning of the year to how do you feel at the end of the year?” Wilson said.
Officials said the goal is to eliminate different departments and individual schools as being their own silos. Most schools now have a parent liaison or homeschool assistant, and the district is working to bring resources like these to all its schools by 2031.
The Parent Center on Genesee Street is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
