That means the character isn’t in Avengers: Doomsday, which opens December 18, but is in Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for December 17, 2027.
Asked what he could share about that second film, Jackson said he has not been told the story. The studio, he explained, has passed along just one piece of information: “You’re not gonna be in this movie. You’ll be in the next.”
The remark settles a question fans have been asking since the initial Doomsday cast was unveiled. Jackson was absent from the official lineup, and a later report claimed Fury would turn up in the film anyway. Many fans had hoped to see him back for the crossover. But now it looks like that’s not in the cards.
Fury has been a scarce presence for some time. Audiences last saw him in The Marvels, released in 2023, the same year he led the Disney+ series Secret Invasion. On the big-screen team-ups he once anchored, the former S.H.I.E.L.D. director has had little to do since Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015.
Jackson’s connection to the role is older than the films. Marvel’s 2002 comic The Ultimates drew Nick Fury to resemble the Pulp Fiction star, and his casting six years later was partially a nod to that artwork. He has played the part ever since, across films, a series and several post-credits cameos.

Several details remain unconfirmed as of this writing. Marvel Studios has not officially announced Jackson for Secret Wars, and nothing has been said about what Fury will be doing in it. Brie Larson‘s Captain Marvel, a hero closely tied to him, is also unconfirmed for Doomsday. Reports describing a possible storyline for the sequel are speculation at this stage.
Doomsday will bring Robert Downey Jr. back to the franchise as Doctor Doom this December, facing most of Marvel’s current heroes. Secret Wars arrives nearly 20 years after Iron Man, and Jackson’s comments indicate that is where Fury’s story picks up. For viewers who have followed him since that first scene in 2008, the wait is one more year.
