I want to open our game-day Bullets before the fifth Blackhawks game of the 2026-27 season with a quick reality check after a back-and-forth in the comments on the gamer after the Hawks’ win on Tuesday night. I absolutely, fully acknowledge that the Blackhawks have been far from good thus far. And their win, while significantly better than the previous three games, was far from perfect.
But we need to be realistic when criticizing the big picture. The Blackhawks have played four (4) games. They have finished two of those four games without a full lineup; Andrew Mangiapane got hurt in the middle of the first game and Teuvo Teräväinen got hurt in the middle of Tuesday night’s win. The Hawks played a third game without Bowen Byram, their top defenseman. And they haven’t had Connor Bedard for a single second of game action yet.
We all want to see development steps and the program moving forward. But we also can’t ignore that they haven’t played with a full deck yet.
Meanwhile, Anton Frondell has put together back-to-back two-point games. He’s been a beast in the last two games. And, at some point, the Hawks will have Bedard making the top six even better. That should be exciting. Frank Nazar is off to a terrific start to the season and finally put some points on the board with a goal and an assist against the Blues. In the third period on Tuesday night he also hit his two biggest speed bursts of the young season, reaching 22.56 mph. I mentioned in our bullets yesterday that Levshunov hit three big bursts in the third period. Nazar was bringing it late as well. His top speed was in the closing seconds when he scored into the empty net. Here are Nazar’s bursts of at least 21 mph to date this season. Source: NHL EDGE After practice on Wednesday, the Blackhawks said Teräväinen is doubtful for Saturday, too. We might not get a more concrete update until the Hawks get home from Long Island. The Blackhawks did make a roster move on Wednesday before practice, placing Mangiapane on injured reserve (lower body) retroactive to Sept. 29 and recalling… forward Dominic Toninato. Toninato showed quite well in the preseason, and is not waiver exempt. So it’s intriguing that he got the call here. With the move, the lines got some tweaks at practice on Wednesday. I will note that Roman Kantserov spent almost two minutes shifting with Frondell and Tyler Bertuzzi in the game on Tuesday and they looked good together. I’m intrigued by the speed element Oliver Moore could add to the line with Nazar and Patrick Kane. Again: all of this is still written in pencil until Bedard returns.Blackhawks lines in practice with Teravainen injured:Moore-Nazar-KaneBertuzzi-Frondell-KantserovSmith-Greene-GreenwayDonato-Toninato-LardisByram-LevshunovVlasic-ColeKaiser-RinzelKorchinski-Del Mastro
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) October 7, 2026 A really good read here from Ben Pope at the Chicago Sun-Times on the Blackhawks maintaining confidence thru struggles. They’ve had their share over the past year plus four games, but the players don’t lack for swagger. Blashill has used that word — swagger — a lot. He wants his team to play confidently. How he conveys that to his team and how they maintain it will be something that’s tested throughout another learning season. The Blackhawks' many young players are learning a crucial skill right now: How to maintain confidence through the inevitable bad games.“You remember that it’s never going to be easy…if you’re trying to be the best."New feature story: t.co/C33VhFBROU
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) October 7, 2026 A fun note for all of us to look forward to in a piece from Frank Seravalli for Sportsnet on Wednesday:According to Sportsnet Stats, Tuesday’s Leafs-Predators game was the fourth in NHL history to have four No. 1 overall picks each score a goal (John Tavares, Auston Matthews, Gavin McKenna and Steven Stamkos). We’ve got the potential for five in one game this season: Blackhawks (Patrick Kane, Connor Bedard), Oilers (Connor McDavid, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins), Sabres (Rasmus Dahlin, Owen Power) and Devils (Nico Hischier, Jack Hughes).
Blackhawks prospect Joel Svensson (5th round, No. 138 overall in 2024) is off to a red-hot start this season for IK Oskarshamn in the HockeyAllsvenskan league in Sweden. The 6-1, 194-pound center has nine goals and 14 points in his first nine games. The Blackhawks’ opponent tonight, the New York Islanders, announced defenseman Alexander Romanov will undergo surgery to repair torn ACL in right knee and will miss 6-8 months. It’s been a terrible run for Romanov, who can’t stay healthy. We got a minor trade on Wednesday. The Edmonton Oilers acquired forward Filip Hallander from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for defenseman Spencer Stastney. Finally, this is so incredibly done. You can hear the true, real emotion in Panger’s voice as he explains how Troy Murray would want these guys to play. And you can hear the emotion in Kane’s voice when he says how much it means to be a Blackhawk.this season we’re introducing something special to our postgame win, player of the game celebration. Troy Murray celebrated the little things. the guy that did something just a little different than the rest— and that’s why last night and every night this season, we ride for Muzz. swipe to see what Troy’s hat means to us. and it would only be right for 88 to be the first to receive the hat ❤️
