Arsenal entered the 2025-26 season as reigning champions for the first time since 2004, with Mikel Arteta hoping to oversee the Gunners’ first successful defence of the top-flight crown since way back in 1934-35.

Defending the Premier League title is notoriously tough.

Only three clubs – under three managers – have ever accomplished that feat. They are Manchester United under Alex Ferguson (four such streaks, including two instances of three in a row), Chelsea under José Mourinho, and Manchester City under Pep Guardiola (two streaks, including four in a row from 2020-21 to 2023-24).

Based on results in the early part of the season, Man City look to be Arsenal’s closest challengers. They have, however, been found guilty by an independent commission of all charges relating to breaches of Premier League financial regulations between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons, and the majority of charges in relation to their failure to co-operate with the league’s investigation. City deny all the allegations and have appealed against the charges.

We’re yet to find out if, how and when they’ll suffer a punishment for this, with that potentially enough to affect their 2026-27 title charge.

Liverpool and Chelsea have new managers in the dugout in the form of Andoni Iraola and Xabi Alonso, with both clubs hoping to challenge at the top of the table this time around. Man Utd, meanwhile, gave Michael Carrick the job permanently in the summer following a successful period as caretaker boss. Will that appointment prove to be enough to get the Red Devils back to the top of the Premier League?

How Does the Opta Supercomputer Model Work?

Opta’s League Prediction model estimates the likelihood of teams finishing in each position in the competition. We can therefore see how successful a team’s season is likely to be, whether it’s their relegation or title chances. The model estimates the probability of each match outcome (win, draw or loss) by using betting market odds and Opta Power Rankings. The odds and rankings are based on historical and recent team performances. The model considers the strength of opponents by using these match outcome probabilities and simulates the remaining fixtures in the competition thousands of times. By analysing the outcome of each of these simulations, the model can see how often teams finished in each league position to create our final predictions.
