American Express Just Announced Its Biggest Airport Lounge Expansion Yet—Including Its Largest One in the World ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

If you’ve traveled through a major airport recently with a premium credit card in your wallet, you are all too familiar with the dreaded airport lounge dance. You walk up hoping for a quiet seat, a fresh espresso, and a moment of calm before boarding, only to be met with a velvet rope and a 45-minute waitlist.

As premium travel cards surged in popularity, airport lounges across the globe felt the pinch.

Now, American Express is answering the overcrowding dilemma with its most ambitious network expansion to date. The brand announced plans across four major global hubs—headlined by an all-new, record-breaking lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) that will officially become the largest Centurion Lounge in the world.

The multi-city investment also includes adding a second lounge at London Heathrow Airport (LHR), doubling the size of the existing club in Philadelphia (PHL), and nearly tripling the square footage of its beloved location in Houston (IAH).

Newark’s 30,000-Square-Foot Megaspace (Opening 2027)

When Amex first teased a lounge for Newark’s stunning new Terminal A, it was slated at around 18,000 square feet. Recognizing the soaring demand in the New York metro area, Amex supersized those plans to a sprawling 30,000-plus square feet across two levels, making it the undisputed crown jewel of the Centurion network.

The opening will make American Express the first credit card issuer with proprietary lounges across all three tri-state gateways: JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark.

Inside, the space pays homage to New Jersey culture with distinct culinary zones:

Three Themed Bars: A classic Main Bar pouring craft cocktails, a Specialty Bar putting a sleek modern spin on iconic Jersey diner culture, and an Italian-inspired Terrace Bar complete with gelato, fresh pastries, and spritzes celebrating the Garden State’s Italian heritage. Blue Roast Wellness Bar: A dedicated cafe space serving specialty espresso, local cold brews, smoothies, and avocado toast. Celebrity Chef Menus: Plated dishes curated by James Beard Award-winning chefs from the Resy Culinary Collective, including Kwame Onwuachi and Michael Solomonov.

London Heathrow is notorious for terminal transfers, and Amex is making departures significantly easier by becoming the first card issuer to boast two proprietary lounges at the UK gateway.

Joining the existing Terminal 3 location, a brand-new 9,000-square-foot lounge is headed to Terminal 5—the home base for British Airways long-haul flights. Designed with soft, fluid architectural curves inspired by the River Thames, the lounge will feature dedicated quiet work zones, a private VIP area, and refined British culinary and bar offerings.

Major Expansions in Philadelphia and Houston

Cardholders who have felt squeezed in existing lounges will see relief on domestic routes:

Philadelphia (PHL): The current lounge will temporarily close on October 16, 2026, for a massive overhaul that doubles its size to more than 12,000 square feet across two stories, reopening in late 2027 with local art installations and a new Blue Roast coffee and wellness bar. Houston (IAH): Set to debut in 2028, the Terminal D lounge is nearly tripling in size to over 23,000 square feet. The overhaul adds a specialty dining area dishing out Gulf Coast flavors, a second full-service cocktail bar, expanded luxury shower suites, and design accents inspired by space exploration.

Between these four massive builds and recently announced spaces in Boston, Charlotte, and Dallas-Fort Worth, finding a quiet corner, a hot meal, and a craft cocktail before boarding is about to get a whole lot easier.
