Disney on Ice is back this season with a brand-new show, and fans of Pixar’s animated classic films are in for a real treat. The exciting production that debuted in September, Spotlight Magic!, brought back a beloved favorite character that hadn’t been seen on the ice in years: Monsters, Inc.’s Mike Wazowski.
That’s right—the little blue sphere of energy, who’s more or less the least scary “monster” you’ve probably ever come across, made his way back to the rink, taking the spotlight in a now-viral portion of the thrilling presentation in which he turns into a glittering, flying disco ball. Far from the only thing bringing wow factor to the show, Spotlight Magic! has everything one expects from a true Disney spectacle: lights, action, fun, sing-alongs, and a whole lot of sparkle.
View this post on InstagramInspired by the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, Spotlight Magic! finds the beloved gang, Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, and Goofy, hosting a fabulous gala complete with red carpets, fancy outfits, and of course, spotlights. While show-goers are used to seeing the usual suspects incorporated—big-time characters like the princesses, heroes, villains, and longtime Disney/Pixar legends—supporting characters get their own shine time in Spotlight Magic!, a detail intentionally woven into the overall theme that makes the performance so surprising and special.
“The fun twist in this show for me (and this is working so closely with the writer, Suzanne) is that instead of just choosing a character that you would expect our spotlight to get us into each story, it lands on someone you might not expect,” Disney on Ice show director, developer, and curator Adam Loosely told Parade in an exclusive interview on Friday, Oct. 2, noting that he aims to grab people’s attention right away with his production’s storylines.
Beyond the exciting, new creativity each show presents seasonally, Loosely believes that what continues to bring guests back year after year is the fact that the show “is rooted in such a happy thing”—and that’s something he’s proud to be a part of.
“Disney on Ice captures an oasis of positivity, happiness, family time… however you define that. In a world that is full of… not that, this is a way of getting away and having a really wholesome, happy, good time, full of laughter, and smiles, and love, and I hope that people leave with a smile on their face,” he said. “I think that smile on their face that they do leave with is what brings them back for generations—it becomes a tradition for the family.”
Throughout the show, fans can look forward to seeing stories play out from beloved films like Moana, Tangled, Toy Story, Beauty & the Beast, and more. Meanwhile, new characters take the spotlight for the first time ever, as Gazelle and Gary De’Snake from Zootopia 2 and Lilo & Stitch‘s Angel each have their own special moments.
Disney on Ice’s Spotlight Magic!, produced by Feld Entertainment, is currently on tour across North America, with upcoming shows taking place in Fairfax, Va. from Oct. 8 to 12, Baltimore, Md. from Oct. 15 to 18, Worcester, Mass. from Oct. 22 to 25, Newark, N. J. from Oct. 28 to Nov. 1, and Philadelphia, Penn. from Dec. 26 to Jan. 3, 2027. Tickets are available online now.
