ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wednesday marked three years since Hamas-led attacks in Israel killed more than 1,000 people.
News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke with Jewish and Muslim groups in Rochester about how the conflict continues to affect their communities. The Jewish Federation in Rochester gathered with local leaders and clergy members to remember those killed on Oct. 7, 2023. Monica Gebell with the Federation said anger, sadness and fear still linger among the Jewish community.
“There is a growing fear in me that the normalization of an acceptance of those chants and those calls for the dismantling of the Jewish homeland of the Jewish state, of the only place in the world that Jews can go to determine their own safety and security,” Gebell said.
Gebell said the conflict still affects the Jewish community in Rochester and blamed that on what she called a large amount of disinformation about the conflict. She said the belief that all Israelis want Palestine gone is not true and that claims like that contribute to antisemitism in the U.S. and calls for the dismantling of Israel.
Sareer Fazili, a leader of the local Muslim community, said the ongoing conflict is also having an impact on his community. He said every day they hear more bad news and that many members of the Muslim community are choosing not to speak out due to fear of harassment.
“You could see across the country that there have been significant attempts to curb, free speech, expression, protest that has happened here, as well in Rochester. The community has continued to advocate, however, there are segments that have gone back, based on the fear of being arrested, being challenged,” Fazili said.
Local advocacy group Speak Up for Palestine sent a statement saying, “Everyday we stand with Palestinians.”
Both Gebell and Fazili said the conflict did not begin three years ago but started decades ago. They both said it is important for people to do their own research.
The Jewish Federation of Rochester will host an education summit in November to help educators learn how to cover the war in Gaza and rising antisemitism.
