Teri McKeever, a former coach at the University of California, Berkeley, who was fired in 2023 after an eight-month investigation into allegations of bullying and harassment, is writing a book that tells her side of the story and traces her rise through the sport.
Allegations about McKeever’s misconduct arose in May of 2022, after several (at the time) current and former Cal swimmers had claimed that McKeever was verbally and emotionally abusing them.
Those allegations led to McKeever being placed on administrative leave and later to her dismissal from the program in January of 2023.
In December of that same 2023 year, McKeever accepted a three-month suspension from the U.S. Center for SafeSport, having admitted that she had been emotionally and physically abusing Cal swimmers for over two decades.
Earlier this summer, 18 former Cal swimmers won an appeal allowing a lawsuit against McKeever to move forward after the case was previously thrown out under the statute of limitations.

According to McKeever’s website, the book takes readers through her rise in competitive swimming, some of the athletes and decisions that make a championship program, and the “accusations that ended her college coaching career.”
The website also mentions that she talks about “how the lessons that she taught athletes helped her through what followed.”
The website does not list an official release date, but it does say the book is coming soon.
The book description on her website also calls it a “must-read” for readers curious about the realities of elite sport, collegiate athletics, and McKeever herself. However, she is referenced as the “woman behind the headlines.”
Crouse was a sports journalist for The New York Times from 2005 to 2021, though her time with the publication ended on a not-so-bright note. According to a report from SFGate, Crouse was suspended in 2021 after failing to disclose an agreement to ghostwrite a book for Michael Phelps while she continued to report on him; she later resigned.
Crouse also earned her varsity letter in swimming at the University of Southern California.
