Swedish furniture giant IKEA announced Tuesday it will close one of its sprawling suburban Chicago stores to instead open a new kind of store in a different location, with a slew of shoppers on social media posting that they aren’t in favor of the major change.

IKEA officials said store closure is part of an effort to “meet customers where they are.” The new store, IKEA said, will be a “smaller-format” store instead be relocated to the Block 59 shopping center in Naperville, about eight miles away.
The new store is slated to open in late 2027, and the Bolingbrook location will remain open until then.
“This relocation reflects how our customers are increasingly living, working and shopping across the broader Bolingbrook-Naperville corridor,” the retailer said in their announcement. “By moving the shopping experience to a small format store in Naperville, we are positioning IKEA closer to growing population centers and a popular shopping district while maintaining strong accessibility for existing Bolingbrook customers.”
The Bolingbrook IKEA store, at 750 E. Boughton Rd., opened in 2005. IKEA’s first Illinois location, which opened in Schaumburg in 1998, at over 400,000 square-feet, was at the time the company’s largest store in North America.
The forthcoming smaller footprint store, IKEA said, is billed as a smaller-format location with a full range of IKEA products including a Swedish Food Market and Swedish Deli.
Another small-format IKEA location is set to come to Gurnee Mills Mall. A previous announcement from the brand said the store was set to open in the fall of 2026. IKEA did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago’s inquiry on an update.
