Dennis Wilson was always known as the resident wild child of the Beach Boys, but one late-night recording session took his rock-and-roll lifestyle to an entirely new level.
While cutting the 1969 track “All I Want to Do,” Wilson decided to take the song’s suggestive title a bit too literally. The result was a shocking studio encounter recorded right onto the master tape. It was a scandalous moment hidden in plain sight that classic rock enthusiasts are still buzzing about decades later.
According to Far Out Magazine, the song was part of the LP 20/20. The album’s liner notes state: “Production Note: Turn up the volume on the fade for a brief X-rated surprise.”
The song’s recording occurred around the time Wilson had befriended members of the Manson family, shortly before the infamous cult carried out the gruesome murders that shocked the world in the summer of 1969. One of the women in the Manson family was reportedly Wilson’s partner in the romantic exchange, heard in the song’s final moments.

The snippet is short and fleeting, but it’s become legendary among Beach Boys fans. A Reddit thread discussed the song.
“Dennis recording himself having sex on a Beach Boys album is insane,” wrote one fan.
A second fan quipped, “I’m more into Pet Sounds than sex sounds.”
In an interview with ABC News, Wilson’s cousin, Mike Love, explained, “Dennis was enthralled by him at one time, and it didn’t hurt that Charlie Manson came with this group of girls. Young girls, who were very enamored with Charlie, and looked up to him as a leader.”
“They actually invited themselves in after Dennis picked up a couple of the girls hitchhiking on Sunset Boulevard and took them back to his home,” Love added. Eventually, the girls and Manson were living in Wilson’s house. However, it took time for Wilson to untangle himself from Manson and his hangers-on.
The Washington Post reported that shortly after their friendship ended, Wilson found a bullet on his bed. After Manson threatened his family, Wilson reportedly beat him up.
20/20 was the fifteenth studio album by the band. It was released in early 1969. The LP contained a dozen tracks featuring “All I Want to Do,” “Do it Again,” and “Our Prayer.”
