Kelly, 26, also appeared in just one big league game with the Cubs, and, although it seemed like he was figuring it out at Iowa by the time he was called up, never really got a shot. It’s possible the Cubs try to bring him back on a new minor league deal so they can keep working with the hard-throwing lefty, or it’s possible the Cubs felt like it just wasn’t going to work out in their system.
Martin, 30, was one of the Cubs higher-hopes reclamation reliever signings in the offseason, and it went about as poorly as it could have, mostly because Martin simply could not throw strikes. It’s a shame, because the talent is obviously there, and he has had past success. I wouldn’t mind the Cubs seeing if there’s another opportunity to try again in 2027 on a minor league deal, but, again, it’s possible both sides decide the fit just wasn’t right.
