Another week, another slow start by the Denver Broncos offense. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to mount another come-from-behind win against the 49ers.
Pro Football Focus (PFF) has released its Week 4 player grades, offering a closer look at Denver’s best and worst individual performances from the loss.
Offense
Best
RG Quinn Meinerz: 78.9 RB Tyler Badie: 76.6 OT Mike McGlinchey: 76.4 TE Adam Trautman: 68.9 LT Garett Bolles: 68.3When evaluating an offense, the focus typically falls on the numbers in the box score. Because of that, it can be easy to overlook just how effective Denver’s offensive line has been this season. Meinerz has been phenomenal through four games, and is once again making a strong case for a third consecutive first-team All-Pro selection.
Worst
TE Nate Adkins: 51.7 WR Troy Franklin: 52.1 WR Courtland Sutton: 52.6 TE Evan Engram: 54.0 RB RJ Harvey: 55.4Sutton was virtually invisible on Sunday, catching just one pass on six targets for four yards. Through four games, he has only nine catches on 22 targets for 86 yards. It’s been a rough start to the season for Sutton, who led the Broncos in receiving each of the last two seasons and recorded back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons.
Defense
Best
OLB Nik Bonitto: 76.5 CB Jahdae Barron: 76.1 DL Sai’vion Jones: 75.6 DB Brandon Jones: 73.5 DL Zach Allen: 73.4With both Pat Surtain II (59.7) and Riley Moss (59.0) leaving Sunday’s game with injuries, Barron stepped into a much larger role. He made the most of the opportunity, catching one pass on two targets for six yards, according to PFF. With both Surtain and Moss expected to miss this upcoming Sunday’s game, Barron could be in line for a starting role.
Worst
CB Que Robinson: 36.5 CB Ja’Quan McMillian: 40.2 OLB Jonah Elliss: 44.8 DL Eyioma Uwazurike: 49.0 DB Talanoa Hufanga: 50.3After Hufanga’s two-pick game last week, he had a disappointing game against his former team. According to PFF, he missed four tackles and allowed one catch on one target for 18 yards. Unfortunately, he couldn’t outrun George Kittle to stop him from scoring a 56-yard touchdown that all but killed the Broncos’ chances of mounting a comeback.
Special Teams
ST Zach Allen: 93.5 LS Mitchell Fraboni: 64.2 PR Marvin Mims Jr.: 37.9 P Jeremy Crawshaw: 60.4 K Wil Lutz: 57.3 (FG) 60.0 (KO)Unfortunately for Mims, in his first game back, he fumbled a return that resulted in a touchdown for the 49ers.
Next up, the Broncos face a winless Los Angeles Chargers team that will be desperate to turn its season around. Denver is just 1-5 against its division rival at SoFi Stadium, making Sunday’s matchup even more important as the Broncos look to avoid falling to 2-3 on the season. Kickoff is set for Sunday at 2:05 p.m. MST.
