Chicago weather: Major temperature swing, rain from Tropical Storm Isaias on the horizon ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A cold front with a 10-degree temperature swing is in the Chicago forecast this week, with unseasonably warm temperatures expected heading into the 2026 Bank of America Chicago Marathon Sunday.

Runners could also wind up racing in the rain thanks to remnants of a newly formed tropical storm in the Gulf.

“The changes are coming all because of what is now Tropical Storm Isaias ,” NBC 5 Storm Team Iisha Scott said.

The storm formed early Wednesday in the warm waters off eastern Mexico. Forecasters said it was expected to strengthen into the first hurricane of the Atlantic season before hitting the U.S. Gulf Coast later in the week.

“It will strengthen pretty quickly,” Scott said, adding that the storm could become a Category 1 or Category 2 hurricane by Friday morning. “We could catch some remnants as we get into Sunday.”

As of early Wednesday, Isaias was located about 285 miles west of Progreso, Mexico, and about 580 miles southwest of the Mississippi River’s mouth, according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center. It had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and was moving east-northeast at 8 mph.

It was not immediately known where the storm may make landfall on the Gulf Coast. The hurricane center’s initial projections said the center of Isaias could come onshore somewhere between eastern Louisiana and the western Florida Panhandle.

By Friday, remnants of the storm will begin drifting north, Scott said. Until then, conditions in the Chicago area are expected to remain dry.

High temperatures Wednesday are expected to reach the mid-to-upper 70s before cooling to the upper 60s and low 70s on Thursday and Friday, Scott said.

Over the weekend, temperatures will be “unseasonably warm,” Scott said, with a high near 80 degrees Saturday and 72 degrees Sunday.

The first chance for rain from Isaias’ remnants could arrive Friday afternoon, though only isolated showers are possible, Scott said. Rain chances increase overnight Saturday into Sunday, with showers possible as early as 8 a.m. as the 2026 Bank of America Chicago Marathon begins, though forecast models could still shift.

“Could it change?” Scott said. “Absolutely.”
