The Diamondbacks will not retain pitching coach Brian Kaplan, reports Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. The Snakes will look elsewhere after the expiration of Kaplan’s two-year contract.
Kaplan, 44, was in his first stint as a lead pitching instructor. He’d spent three years on staff with the Phillies as an assistant pitching coach before making the move to the desert. Arizona tabbed Kaplan over the 2024-25 offseason to replace Brent Strom.
The D-Backs have had a middling pitching staff over the past two seasons. They’re 22nd in ERA (4.34) and ahead of only the Rockies in strikeout percentage (19.8%) since the start of 2025. The results were roughly similar in both years. Arizona starters particularly struggled to miss bats this year, ranking 29th in strikeout rate and 28th in whiff percentage.
Corbin Burnes has been injured for most of the last two years. Top relievers A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez missed a lot of 2025-26 rehabbing elbow surgeries. Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen are coming off the worst seasons of their careers.
Of course, there have been some success stories. Eduardo Rodriguez and Brandon Pfaadt had solid seasons despite middling strikeout rates. Michael Soroka made good on a $7.5MM free agent contract, in part because of a cutter that he and the team implemented this year. The Snakes also hit on a few bullpen breakouts in 2026. Juan Morillo and Brandyn Garcia stepped into leverage roles, while Jonathan Loáisiga reestablished himself as a quality ground-ball arm.
Arizona signed Torey Lovullo to a new two-year deal at the end of the regular season. The 11th-year skipper declined to answer at the time whether he’d make any changes to the coaching staff. Gilbert writes that it’s to be determined whether there’ll be any further staff adjustments.
