After more than two decades in suburban Bolingbrook, IKEA is preparing to relocate to another Chicago suburb, where customers will encounter a different shopping experience.
The Swedish furniture retailer known for its sprawling locations announced Tuesday it will close its Bolingbrook store and open a smaller-format location in Naperville as part of the company’s efforts “to meet customers where they are.”
“This relocation reflects how our customers are increasingly living, working and shopping across the broader Bolingbrook-Naperville corridor,” the company said, in part. “By moving the shopping experience to a small format store in Naperville, we are positioning IKEA closer to growing population centers and a popular shopping district while maintaining strong accessibility for existing Bolingbrook customers.”
The new store, planned at the Block 59 shopping center, is billed as a smaller-format location with a Swedish Food Market and Swedish Deli, though IKEA has not disclosed the store’s square footage. The current Bolingbrook location is 310,000 square feet, while the retailer’s Schaumburg store is around 400,000 square feet.
The new store is slated to open in late 2027, and the Bolingbrook location will remain open until then.
The company has increasingly prioritized smaller-format locations.
Earlier this year, IKEA announced a “new format” 66,000-square-foot store would open at Gurnee Mills Mall in the fall of 2026, featuring fully furnished room settings that represent key areas of the home. The retailer also announced plans to open nine other stores this year.
