Wickham Farms safety practices
Dale Wickham, a co-owner of Wickham Farms in Penfield, said they have several practices in place to make sure these rides are done safely before they take off.
“Training on each tractor and making sure that you can start smoothly and stop on a dime. One of the big things that we also do is prioritizing training with how fast are we going? We’re going to go in a slow slow gear that prioritizes control and power versus speed,” Wickham said.
Wickham said controlling speed is critical, and the tractors at their farm probably only go about three miles an hour. The farm also does routine maintenance on the tractors and trails to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Wickham said it was sad to see the video from Wellsburg and hopes people can learn from what happened and practice safe operation every day.
Stokoe Farms safety practices
Stokoe Farms in Scottsville said the hayride crash in Wellsburg could have been avoided. The farm has offered hayrides for more than 40 years, doing daily safety checks and frequent driver training to make sure nothing like that happens at their location.
Each tractor at Stokoe Farms has a set of rules posted next to the driver seat, including the maximum RPMs allowed. The wagons also have rules posted for riders.
Suzanne Stokoe, the owner of Stokoe Farms, said she is worried the crash in Wellsburg could affect the entire industry.
“We’re targeted by insurance companies that start to say hey maybe this is not something safe that we can insure but there’s farms all across New York State locally and across the country that follow industry recommended safety measures and standards for everything from our playground equipment to our wagon rides to parking,” Stokoe said.
Stokoe Farms said these hayrides might look like a simple operation, but they never treat them like one. The farm said there are no shortcuts when it comes to safety.
Stokoe Farms also released the following statement Tuesday:
