Eva Marie Saint, who is best known for her roles in classic films including “On the Waterfront” and “North by Northwest,” died on Tuesday, October 6, at her home in Los Angeles. She was 102.
She died of natural causes, according to a family spokesperson (per the Hollywood Reporter).
Saint’s legacy also includes an Academy Award, having won Best Supporting Actress for “On the Waterfront” in 1955. Before her death, she was the oldest living Oscar winner. As for her role in “North by Northwest,” she played a blonde spy in the 1959 Hitchcock thriller.
She also appeared in the ABC series “Moonlighting.” Saint made her television debut on “Camp Hoop La” before becoming a regular on “One Man’s Family.” Other appearances include Lt. Wilma Deering on the 1950 sci-fi series Buck Rogers, as well as on Broadway in the Horton Foote play The Trip To Bountiful. She won the 1954 Outer Critics Circle Special Award for her role as Thelma. Saint received two Emmy nominations for Best Actress in a Single Performance in 1955, one of which was for TV’s Middle of the Night as well as the Producers Showcase presentation of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town. Her resume includes A Hatful of Rain (1957), Raintree Country (1957), That Certain Feeling (1956), Exodus (1960), The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1966), 36 Hours (1964), Grand Prix (1966), The Sandpiper (1965), and The Stalking Moon (1968).
More recently, her roles include playing Sam Shepard’s mom in Don’t Come Knocking (2005) and Martha Kent in Superman Returns (2006), as well as appearing in Akiva Goldsman’s Winter’s Tale (2014) and doing voice work in the Nickelodeon series The Legend of Korra.
She is survived by her children, Darrell and Laurette, four grandchildren, Eli, Tyler, Molly, and Stella, and two great-grandchildren, Arlo and Finley. She is predeceased by her husband, television director Jeffrey Hayden, who died in 2016. ,
