In the game against the New York Jets, the Bears only allowed 157 yards of offense to the Jets, marking only the sixth time since 2000 the Bears have held an opponent to less than 160 yards gained, according to Pro Football Reference’s Stathead tool.
While that was a remarkable performance, there is one stat that may be even more mind-blowing for Bears fans.
In the game, the Jets had seven third-down opportunities, and failed to convert for a first down on any of them.
According to the Stathead tool, that 0-for performance by the Bears’ defense marks the first time since 1997 that they have held a team without a single third down conversion in a game, and marks only the third time they have ever achieved that feat.
Surprisingly, the last time the Bears’ defense managed to hold an opponent without a conversion was a game they lost 20-17 to the New Orleans Saints, but they were successful in the other game, a 30-6 blowout victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1992.
By contrast, the Bears racked up 492 yards of offense and ran 89 plays in the game, completely dominating time of possession and holding the ball for nearly three-quarters of the game.
Despite a rough Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers, the Bears’ defense is only allowing 282.3 yards per game, good for third in the NFL, and 16.3 points per game, good for fourth in the league.
They’ll of course be in for a stern test this weekend when they face the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, with kickoff set for noon.
