ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Students from 55 schools across the region will get to explore career paths on Tuesday at the fifth annual ROC With Your Hands event. It’s happening from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rochester Community Sports Complex.
The event connects students in grades 7 through 12 with careers and training opportunities that don’t require a college degree, such as skilled trades and advanced manufacturing. Dozens of employers will be there to answer students’ questions and connect them with job shadowing and apprenticeship opportunities.
Rich Turner, executive director of the Rochester Technology and Manufacturing Association, said the ultimate goal is to connect students with a state-registered apprenticeship that they’re happy with.
“This is to give those youth exposure to these careers so that, hopefully, by the time they’re a junior or senior, they’re thinking about our Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship, where they could do a job shadow or a paid co-op or even tour a company,” Turner said.
Turner said the event has grown enormously since its first year, expanding from mostly students in Rochester to students across the region. This year, organizers are expecting 1,700 students to attend.
News10NBC’s Garrett Chan asked Turner about how the rise in artificial intelligence is changing the skilled trades industry. Turner said that, even with AI, companies will still need workers to use their critical thinking skills to solve problems.
“AI has been a big concern in our industry, and we’ve talked to a lot of our employers about this. The best thing we found out is AI is not really replacing jobs. It’s going to enhance. It’s going to make things more efficient, much like automation did a few years back,” he said.
The Rochester Technology & Manufacturing Association is hosting the event in partnership with the City of Rochester, Monroe County, Monroe Community College, RochesterWorks, UNiCON Rochester, and the Builders Exchange. You can learn more here.
