ITHACA, N.Y. — Hundreds of Cornell students and faculty gathered on Monday to protest the university’s handling of allegations of a gang rape at an on-campus fraternity house.
Protesters called for Cornell to expel or revoke degrees from people they said were complicit. They also pushed for independent hearings, external investigations, and stronger support for survivors.
“One of my good friends was assaulted and had a lot of really bad stuff happen to her because of what happened in the first case, and then how the university reacted externally of that,” one student said. “And I saw the toll that it took on her. I saw the pain that it inflicted on her, and that it still inflicts on her today.”
Protesters said their efforts will continue with a town hall and campus-wide sit-in planned later this week. In a lawsuit filed in September, a woman, identified only as “Jane Doe,” said seven other students sexually assaulted her at the Chi Pi fraternity house in 2024. She said she was pressured to snort ketamine, smoke marijuana, and drink alcohol and became incapacitated when the alleged gang rape happened.
The woman is suing the former students, the Chi Phi fraternity, the university, an Ithaca bar, and others, seeking undisclosed damages. News10NBC has confirmed that one of the defendants named in the lawsuit is from Canandaigua.
