The ECB is expected to announce its centrally contracted players next week after delaying the list from this week. England will begin their winter schedule with a three-match Test series in South Africa from December to January before travelling to Bangladesh for a two-match Test series in February.
Since that injury, Bashir has played only twice for England, including one Test in which he did not bowl a single delivery. He featured in two Tests during England’s 2-1 home series defeat to New Zealand this summer but remained an unused squad member during their 3-0 series win over Pakistan.
Stephen Fleming Could Turn To Shoaib Bashir In Bangladesh
England could continue with an all-seam attack when they tour South Africa from December to January, depending on the conditions. Stephen Fleming will begin his tenure as Test head coach during the three-match series, which could limit Shoaib Bashir’s opportunities if England prefer four frontline fast bowlers.
Shoaib Bashir has taken 71 wickets in 21 Tests at an average of 39.42, with a best of 6/81 and four five-wicket hauls. He has also scored 106 runs in Test cricket and gives England a proven spin option when conditions favour his style of bowling.
ECB Set To Reward Emerging Test Players
Tom Banton is also in line for his first central contract after a strong run in white-ball cricket, while Rehan Ahmed is expected to have his existing deal renewed despite losing his place for next month’s ODI tri-series in Pakistan.
The ECB awarded 26 men’s central contracts last year, alongside four pace-bowling development contracts, and could increase that number following the departures of Stokes and Wood.
