Red Sox View Curtis Mead As Early Favorite For Second Base Job ...Middle East

News by : (MLBtraderumors) -

The Red Sox unfortunately didn’t get much of a look at Curtis Mead this year. Boston bought big on his breakout form in Washington, sending talented young southpaw Connelly Early to the Nationals at the deadline.

Mead was hit by a pitch from Jack Perkins in his second at-bat in a Sox uniform, suffering a broken left wrist that essentially ended his season. He was out until the second game of the Wild Card series, when he was activated to replace Roman Anthony after the latter’s injury. Mead didn’t make an appearance in the Sox’s playoff game, as skipper Chad Tracy was understandably reluctant to toss him right into an elimination game after a two-month absence.

While it surely wasn’t the start that the Sox envisioned, Mead projects for a big role on the 2027 club. Tracy told reporters (including Tim Healey of The Boston Globe) that it’s “broadly (the) plan” for Mead to get the majority of the second base work. “He was acquired for a reason. You see the numbers that kind of project at least toward a 30-home run season. And adding that, we were really excited about that,” the manager said.

Mead connected on 17 longballs with a .253/.353/.498 batting line in 88 games. A former top prospect who’d reliably hit minor league pitching, Mead entered the season looking like a potential Quad-A player. He had a .238/.300/.317 slash in 445 career big league plate appearances and fell out of favor with both the Rays and White Sox. Chicago designated him for assignment at the end of Spring Training, as he failed to win a bench spot and had exhausted his minor league options.

The move to Washington seemingly sparked Mead’s career. He improved his plate discipline while getting more balls in the air to left field, allowing him to get to more power consistently. That was surely a selling point for a Boston front office that made a point of pursuing righty bats whose swings play well at Fenway Park (e.g. Willson Contreras, Caleb Durbin).

While Mead’s strong half-season raised the confidence level in his bat, he’ll probably give a few runs back on the other side of the ball. Scouting reports when he was a prospect pointed to him as a bat-first player. He has neutral grades in a small sample of 324 career innings at the keystone. Mead has logged slightly larger workloads at the corner infield spots — 864 frames at third and 411 1/3 as a first baseman — and rated as a fringy defender at both positions. He’s a below-average runner with minimal arm strength.

Boston rotated through second basemen in 2026. Five players logged at least 100 innings there. Anthony Seigler led the team with 40 starts. It was a relative weak point offensively, as Sox second basemen hit .236/.306/.367 with 12 home runs. Mead should be expected to outperform that if he indeed gets the job.

That said, it’s easy enough to envision the Sox pushing Mead to a multi-positional role before long. The free agent second base group — headlined by Brandon Lowe, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Luis Arraez — is a relative strength in a rough class for bats. The Sox reportedly kicked the tires on Zach Neto at the deadline; the Angels will surely get plenty of calls again this winter. Ketel Marte’s future in Arizona seems uncertain.

Second base would also be the easiest fallback for Trevor Story if/when top shortstop prospect Franklin Arias debuts in 2027. Story had an injury-plagued year but finished on an upswing after undergoing sports hernia surgery. He’s signed for $30MM next year (via a $25MM salary and $5MM option buyout) and now has full no-trade rights after completing his fifth season in Boston. All players with 10 years of service time who’ve played five years with their current team have full no-trade protection under the CBA. The contract and declining production would make it very difficult to line up an offseason trade.
