Back in 1992, Days of our Lives did the unthinkable following the exit of daytime superstar Peter Reckell and recast the beloved role of Bo Brady with former Another World star Robert Kelker Kelly in what would be considered one of the most successful recasts in daytime history.
In the lead-up to Kelly’s arrival on March 13, 1992, NBC launched a promotional campaign to tease his entrance. “Everybody is saying he’s the hottest thing to happen to television,” the announcer began.
The actor was coming off a successful run on Another World, where he portrayed Sam Fowler. Now set to take over as Bo, viewers were initially hesitant that he would be able to handle the leading man given Reckell’s popularity. However, the transition to Days proved to be effortless.

Kelly’s Bo picked up right where Reckell’s left off, with his romance opposite Carly Manning (Crystal Chappell) taking center stage.

— dool.fan (@doolfan777451) October 5, 2026Bo and Carly remained a popular pairing, with the two appearing in the Days of our Lives primetime spinoff, Days of our Lives One Stormy Night, as the triangle with Carly’s ex-fiancé, Lawrence Alamain (Michael Sabatino), took center stage.
Despite the love story playing out on-screen, things were a bit more complex behind the scenes, as Chappell did not feel comfortable acting opposite the star. In her memoir, The Perfect Art of Imperfection: My Life So Far, Chappell called out Kelker-Kelly.
“I have no idea what the problem was, and I didn’t much care. All I knew was that from the minute he walked onto the set, I found him to be an aggressive, mean-spirited bully…I was afraid of him,” she wrote.
Following Chapell’s exit in October of 1993, Kelly’s Bo moved on with bad girl Billie Reed, played by future The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and The Traitors star Lisa Rinna.

The two had plenty of on-screen chemistry, with viewers instantly hooked on the pairing and rooting for Bo to help Billie get back on the right track. Ultimately, he helped her navigate her troubled past and set herself up for an amazing future, as the two planned to raise Bo’s son, Shawn Douglas, together.
Unfortunately, Rinna shared a similar negative experience working opposite Kelly as Chappell, writing in her memoir You Better Believe I’m Gonna Talk About It, “He made my life a living hell on the set of Days. He was horrible to me. I’d go so far as to say verbally abusive. He was passive-aggressive, manipulative, and played weird mind games.”
Following Kristian Alfonso’s return as the love of Bo’s life, Hope Williams in 1994, fans anxiously awaited the reunion of Bo and Hope. Only Alfonso wasn’t playing Hope, or at least that is what viewers were initially led to believe, as Hope was suffering from amnesia and believed she was Gina. As the storyline unfolded, it was revealed that Gina was Hope, and viewers knew a reunion was in the cards. Unfortunately for Kelly, the storyline wasn’t going to play out the way he’d envisioned with his interpretation of Bo, as Reckell was poised to return.

On August 1, 1995, Reckell returned to the role, and Kelly would exit the part. Kelly would go on to rejoin Another World in 1996 as Shane Roberts / Bobby Reno before joining ABC soap opera General Hospital as Stavros Cassadine in 2001.
