SANTA MARIA, Calif. (KEYT) – The parent of an Allan Hancock College student was detained on the school's main campus by what are believed to have been federal agents Monday morning.
According to Allan Hancock College, around 9:45 a.m., officers with ICE arrived at the school's Santa Maria campus and detained the student's parent in Parking Lot 2 before immediately leaving campus.
The identity of the people who conducted the operation has not been independently verified by Your News Channel.
Santa Maria City Councilmember Gloria Soto hosted a press conference about the incident Monday afternoon.
During the press conference, a student who identified herself as Miley shared her father was taken into custody, but did not have any additional details about the incident.
A vigil was set up after the press conference for her father.
The school shared in a press release Monday that it did not participate in the operation and did not have warning that it would happen on campus.
"Our campuses should be places where every student can learn, grow and pursue their goals without fear," stated Allan Hancock College Monday. "The Allan Hancock College Police Department does not detain, question or arrest individuals solely based on suspected undocumented immigration status. The college does not participate in federal immigration enforcement unless required by state or federal law, and student records remain confidential and are not released without appropriate legal authorization or as otherwise required by law."
