Downtown Rochester restaurant The Vesper says a break-in cost more than $2,600 after a window was shattered ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Multiple restaurants in downtown Rochester have reported break-ins over the past month.

Charlotte Fahy, one of the co-owners of The Vesper, said this was the first time the restaurant had been broken into. She said she arrived last Thursday morning to find a bottom window shattered and the cash register missing.

“It was devastating to see – and feels like her safety and privacy are violated,” Fahy said.

The Rochester Police Department’s open data portal showed at least 10 burglaries in the area of the Inner Loop and East End over the past two months. Another nearby restaurant, Locals Only, posted photos on Instagram last week saying it had been broken into three times in the last month.

Rochester police said they responded to a broken window at Locals Only last Thursday, the same day they responded to The Vesper. Fahy said she worries this is becoming a trend.

“If local businesses keep getting broken into, how much can we thrive? And then if we’re not here, then the city’s going to fall apart,” Fahy said.

Fahy said they were able to get the window fixed the same day and did not have to close, but it cost more than $2,600 to replace. She said insurance did not cover the window, the cash register or the money stolen.

“So these are all expenses that come out of my personal pocket. So we don’t – being a small business, we don’t have these large safety nets that a corporation would have,” Fahy said.

Fahy said she got a call from the property manager about the broken window on her way in to work and called police to report it, but never spoke to an officer. Rochester police said they responded that morning after a contractor reported a broken window but did not know if anything was stolen.

“Being a business owner, if I am calling and asking for help from law enforcement, it’s their duty to respond to calls,” Fahy said.

The Rochester Police Department said it is willing to put Fahy in contact with someone who can discuss the response. Fahy said after the break-in, they decided to add cameras and stop keeping cash in the restaurant out of fear this might happen again.

Police said they do not have any information connecting the break-ins at The Vesper and Locals Only. Anyone with information is asked to call 911.
