Riley Green and Carly Pearce already showed they have amazing chemistry in their hit sultry duet, “If I Don’t Leave, I’m Gonna Stay,” and now they’re joining together again, not for a song, but for The Voice. Pearce joins Green’s team as a mentor starting Tuesday (Oct. 6.).
When it came time for Green to pick an advisor, the choice for the rookie coach was an easy one. “I’ve been a huge fan of her long before I even had a record deal and came to [Nashville],” Green says, sitting on a sofa beside Pearce during The Voice taping in Burbank. “Then, obviously we had the duet together and I just think we were kind of having such a moment with that and the music video, when this came up, she was just a really obvious choice for me.”
Pearce, who will also be in episodes airing Oct 12-13, 19 and 26, has served as a mentor on the show before when she worked with then coach Michael Bublé in 2024 as a playoff advisor. “No matter what genre of music you do, you’ve been in [the contestants’] shoes in some form or fashion,” she says of that experience. “You’ve had a dream, and you’ve wanted to do this. I think I’m just trying to see what makes each person unique. For Michael’s team, there was nobody in my [realm] of country music, but just getting in there and kind of seeing what their strengths were was really a fun thing for me, and I just really enjoyed it.”
Plus, Green says he got a taste of what Pearce will be like because she mentored him through the recording of “If I Don’t Leave, I’m Gonna Stay.”
“When she asked me to be a part of that song, that was a stretch for me,” he says. “It sounded like Charles Kelley on the demo or him and Ryan Hurd mixed together. How they phrased things and the harmonies was really not where I would have went,” he says. “That’s probably the most I’ve had to learn to sing something. And I think that’s what this show’s about. It’s about trying things you’re not comfortable with, so she was an obvious choice for me when I was trying to coach somebody else. She knows what she’s doing.”
As Green has expressed before, he feels his role on the show is to be similar to Blake Shelton in his deft humor, but also in his funny relationship with Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, which Green has sustained. “Blake just told me not to make friends with anybody,” Green says with a laugh. He seems to be holding to that, but his admiration and affection for his fellow new coach, Queen Latifah, is very evident.
“I I think I really understood what they were looking for because I know what Blake did so well,” he says. “You know, he’s really dry, and his sense of humor is great. And being the only country act on The Voice as a coach, you have to hold that role. And Blake’s a good old boy from Oklahoma, and I think that I could kind of play that good old boy from Alabama without really having to try too hard.”
With several country artists on Green’s team, Pearce sees her role as to “give constructive criticism, but also build them up in what makes them unique and good, and or what I see maybe that is a little bit special that they could work on.”
Green agrees, adding their role is to find each contestant’s strength and provide confidence through their own experience. “There was a time when I didn’t like hearing my voice. I never thought I was a good enough singer to make it anywhere. And since then, I’ve played enough that I’ve gotten some confidence,” Green says. “So a lot of these people are so new to performing; they haven’t necessarily gone out and played 120 shows a year for a decade. Maybe our role would be to find the things that we think they do really well, and hopefully it means a lot coming from somebody that they grew up listening to telling them that they’re really good at this particular thing, and that’s what they need to lean into.”
For Green, taping two seasons of The Voice (he’s also a judge on Season 31, which shot concurrently with Season 30), while being on the road, has been a challenge. “Doing this while you’re on tour is pretty tough, but I got to taste it when we filmed Marshals last year,” he says. “That was right in the middle of a tour. We were flying to Utah every week. So I think that where I would like to maybe be a little less busy, the opportunities that I’m getting right now are things you can’t turn down, and this is certainly one of those.”
As they will be doling out advice, Green and Pearce revealed the best advice they ever got: “My pa-paw told me never spend $1 you don’t have,” Pearce says, adding, “I come from a long line of really strong women, and my mom, who probably got it from her mom, [said] ‘Never forget where you come from.’”
Similarly, Green’s advice comes from a grandparent: “My granddaddy Buford used to say, ‘The best time to leave is when everybody wishes you’d stay.’ I think he told me that so I would not stay at the bar ’til two in the morning, act like an idiot. But there’s a little bit of that in anything you do, especially performances. Leave them wanting a little more.”
After two turns as a mentor, is Pearce ready to join her buddy Green as a coach? Pearce says she is “always open” to discussions. More importantly, when asked if the pair have any more duets planned, Green says, “She asks me, I will. The last one worked out pretty good!”
