Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are one of Hollywood’s A-list couples, with the Basic Instinct star commenting on their 2013 separation over a decade later.
The Oscar winner, 82, has come clean about his past relationships and rumors in his new memoir, “One Helluva Ride.” He openly spoke about and confirmed having had a secret romance with Kathleen Turner and recently fought back against rumors of sex addiction.
Douglas further promoted his memoir in an interview with the Sunday Times, where the topic of his brief 2013 separation from Zeta-Jones was discussed. The actor didn’t agree with the publication’s question about how he “won her back,” and admitted it’s not what actually happened.
“What, I won her back? It was mutual,” he told the publication. “You know, we had our problems but I love her dearly and, 25 years, you know.”
The Marvel actor didn’t divulge further details, but briefly added, “I mean, I don’t know about your marital status, but marriage is a lot of work, you know. And so, you know, we’re good. We’re in good shape. It’s all I can say.”

Douglas and Zeta-Jones met in 1998 and married two years later in 2000. It was reported that the couple was living separately in May 2013 after Douglas returned from the Cannes Film Festival. By August, their reps confirmed they were “taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage.”
It was reported that their separation came after Douglas made some controversial comments in which he blamed his tongue cancer on oral sex. His publicist retracted the remarks, with Douglas apologizing for any issues they may have caused Zeta-Jones.
The couple never divorced or separated during that time. Douglas made various comments about their separation, not meaning “the end” of their marriage, and still thanked her during speeches. He wrote in his memoir that he “never gave up hope that we would reconcile.”
By late 2013/early 2014, the couple had reconciled, and Douglas publicly commented that everything was going great. The actor has since said they are stronger than ever and that repairing their marriage had to be mutual.
