Austin Simmons and DeSean Bishop were both the headline attractions in front of their home fans during huge SEC victories in Week 5.
For Simmons, the Mizzou quarterback was simply awesome in the Tigers’ 45-17 blowout of a Florida team that entered undefeated and ranked in the top 10.
For Bishop, the Tennessee running back was everywhere Auburn tacklers weren’t in a 24-14 victory over the Tigers that got the Volunteers back in the win column.
The quarterback and running back were big winners on Saturday afternoon, and then on Monday they both won again, being named SEC co-offensive players of the week to lead the entire SEC Player of the Week honor roll for an exciting Week 5.
Simmons was accurate (23-of-30 passing), he threw for 340 yards, with 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions, tearing up that Florida defense as Mizzou bounced back from a loss to Mississippi State. His QBR for the game was a scintillating 91.5, as Simmons served notice to the rest of the SEC that he should be considered one of the league’s top signal-callers.
For Bishop, Saturday’s performance was a game-changer, because Tennessee was forced to shuffle its quarterbacks during the matchup against Auburn. While the QB situation was in flux for the Vols, Bishop solidified things on offense by rolling up 220 yards rushing on 34 carries with 3 touchdowns.
Bishop now has 540 yards rushing on the season with 7 touchdowns, but he was never needed any more than on Saturday as Tennessee bounced back from its loss to Texas.
