The No. 5 Alabama women’s soccer team hosted the unranked Ole Miss Rebels on Friday for senior night. The Crimson Tide won 2-0, remaining undefeated in SEC play.
This shutout puts goalkeeper Madi Munguia in second place for single-season shutouts with eight, just two shy of tying McKinley Crone’s 10 in 2022.
“What another great performance from us,” head coach Wes Hart said. “I’ve been saying it all year and it probably sounds like a little bit of a broken record but we’re finding ways to continue to win games.”
Alabama was quick to get points on the board with forward Ashley Roni scoring a goal in the ninth minute.
Just one minute later, Ole Miss defender Alena Watts received a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Defender Kennedy Garcia scored a goal off her right boot in the 27th minute.
“I’m glad I could get the starting goal and Kennedy just put away another one and sealed the deal,” Roni said.
That was shortly followed by another Ole Miss yellow card. Forward Sarah Granno was carded for unsportsmanlike conduct in the 30th minute.
The first half ended with the Crimson Tide and the Rebels each taking nine shots, with Alabama having five on goal and Ole Miss three.
The second half was dominated by Alabama. The Crimson Tide took 17 shots with five on goal. The Rebels were held off by Alabama’s backline and had only three shots in the second half.
The game ended with no goals in the second half, leaving the Crimson Tide up 2-0.
Alabama celebrated nine seniors: Cali Brewer, Avery Brown, Kennedy Garcia, Olivia Herrera, Leah Klurman, Coralie Lallier, Kierson McDonald, Melina Rebimbas and Larkin Thomason.
“There were tears,” Garcia said. “It’s just very fun and just recognizing that I’m so blessed to have this opportunity to play.”
Alabama will be back in action on Thursday in Gainesville, Florida to take on the Florida Gators. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. CT.
