NEW YORK — The state is expanding its free community college initiative for New Yorkers ages 25 to 55, aiming to help more adults adapt to the changing workforce.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Monday that starting in January, New Yorkers in that age group will be able to enroll in a SUNY or CUNY associate degree program in a high-demand field for free, even if they have already completed a college degree in a different area.
The high-demand fields include cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing, engineering, and other field shaped by the impacts of AI, Hochul says.
The initiative will cover tuition, fees, books and supplies, and is designed to help tens of thousands of adult learners pivot careers without accumulating debt.
In 2025, the state launched the Reconnect initiative, which let New Yorkers between the ages of 25-55 enroll in a SUNY or CUNY associate degree program in a high-demand field as long as they didn’t already have a college degree.
Now, the state has expanded access to those with prior degrees. Hochul says this expansion is part of her plan to address the impacts of AI on the workforce and across the nation.
The expansion will take effect for the Spring 2027 semester, which starts in January for most colleges. To learn more, visit Hochul’s website here.
