Morgan State’s Cameron Edge, Gardner-Webb’s Tre Yanez, Austin Peay’s Denver Harper and Harvard’s Nathan Bailey were selected on Monday as the Stats Perform FCS National Players of the Week for Week 5 college football games.
In addition, the Idaho Vandals were named the Stats Perform FCS National Team of the Week.
Following are this week’s five honorees plus honorable mention selections:
FCS National Offensive Player of the Week
Cameron Edge, Morgan State, QB, Sr., 6-2, 230
Edge completed 31-of-40 pass attempts for 444 yards and accounted for all five of Morgan State’s touchdowns in the MEAC squad’s 38-35 victory at Villanova, which ended the Wildcats’ 21-game regular-season winning streak against FCS nonconference opponents. Edge’s second rushing touchdown with 36 seconds left – from 2 yards out – lifted the Bears (4-1, best start since 2009) from a 35-31 deficit. His passing yards were the third most in MSU history.
Honorable Mention: Nate Bell, QB, Eastern Washington; Jaqai Carter, WR, Robert Morris; Jordan Fisher, RB, UC Davis; Gavin Garcia, RB, The Citadel; Kai Honda, RB, Princeton; Brooks Davis, WR, Montana; Kennedy McGill, QB, Western Illinois; Dante Reno, QB, Yale; Landon Sharpe, QB, Presbyterian; Jaylon Tolbert, QB, Alcorn State
FCS National Defensive Player of the Week
Tre Yanez, Gardner-Webb, LB, Jr., 6-1, 215
Yanez anchored a dominating defensive performance as Gardner-Webb edged Charleston Southern 12-10 in its Ohio Valley Conference opener and the North-South BBQ Bowl. He collected 13 tackles – reaching double figures for the fifth time in six games – with five solos, 2.5 tackles for loss (negative-8 yards) and one sack. GWU allowed just 178 yards of total offense – its stingiest performance in nearly four years – and CSU was 0 for 12 on third downs.
Honorable Mention: Ebony Curry Jr., DE, Youngstown State; Leo Glover, S, North Alabama; Myles Hamilton, OLB, Sacred Heart; Jon Horton, DE, Grambling State; Jarvis Johnson, LB, ETSU; Max Malo, LB, Brown; Mike Slyvalie, LB, HCU; Porter Small, DE, Weber State; Javieane Stevens, LB, Mississippi Valley State; Dillon Williams, DB, Abilene Christian; Jeremiah Young, DE, UIW
FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week
Denver Harper, Austin Peay, WR/PR, R-Fr., 5-8, 161
The Week 2 Freshman of the Week became the season’s first two-time national award recipient as he scored off an 82-yard punt return and a 109-yard (officially 100 yards) missed field goal return in Austin Peay’s 42-17 triumph over New Haven. Harper also caught a 10-yard touchdown reception, with his six touches accounting for 227 yards.
Honorable Mention: Brady Clark, P, Princeton; Chris Gundy, KR/PR, Valparaiso; Brooks Honore, P, South Dakota; Max Pelham, P, South Dakota State; Jalen Williams, KR/RB, Arkansas-Pine Bluff
FCS National Freshman Player of the Week
Nathan Bailey, Harvard WR, Fr., 5-8, 175
Bailey scored on perhaps the FCS season’s most memorable play: He took a lateral from teammate Teigan Pelletier and raced to the pylon from 8 yards out to finish a game-ending Hail Mary pass completion of 44 yards as Harvard stunned Colgate 20-17. Bailey finished with the most receptions (16) and the fourth-most receiving yards (197) by an FCS player this season. He also had one carry, one kickoff return and one punt return while gaining 224 all-purpose yards.
Honorable Mention: Rashon Brown, RB, Bethune-Cookman; Caleb Geronomi, DB, Richmond; Kamerin McDowell-Moore, RB, Elon; Zalen Watkins, DL, Gardner-Webb; Gabriel Wiggins, RB/KR, Central Connecticut State; Dax Wiskur, DB, Drake
FCS National Team of the Week
Idaho Vandals (35-34 win over No. 1 Montana State)
In gaining its first win, Idaho became the first unranked team to beat an FCS No. 1 since the spring 2021 season. With the Vandals trailing 34-27, quarterback Joshua Wood threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Jezioro on the game’s final play, then followed with a two-point run. Wood (356 yards of total offense, three total TDs) and Jezioro (six receptions, 147 yards, two TDs) fueled the offense, while linebacker Cruz Hepburn had a game-high 13 tackles. Coach Thomas Ford’s 1-4 squad ended defending FCS champion MSU’s 19-game winning streak.
Honorable Mention: Mississippi Valley State (28-27 win over Prairie View A&M); Morgan State (38-35 win at Villanova); Presbyterian (55-21 win over St. Thomas)
