A new analysis shows that while Ohio officials have a little reason to be proud of relatively low unemployment rates, the bigger picture is disturbing. Job growth is slowing to a crawl.
Policy Matters Ohio reports one reason for slowed job growth alongside low unemployment is that employers are more cautious about hiring.
Nationwide, there is stronger than expected hiring, but Policy Matters researcher Molly Bryden told the Ohio Capital Journal that signals more a recovery from an earlier slowdown than a continued upward trend.
And here in the Buckeye State, the number of people actively seeking work has dropped. Some people are just giving up.
“Ohio has seen the nation’s largest decrease in statewide unemployment (-1.5 percentage points) since January of 2025,” Bryden said. “However, lower unemployment isn’t always a positive sign — over the same period, Ohio’s labor force level has shrunk by 1.9%: the 10th-largest decrease in the country.”
In fact, 95,000 fewer Ohioans were participants in the labor force as of August 2026 than in the same month a year ago. And employment is up by only 5,000 since last August, Bryden told the Capital Journal.
If there are fewer people seeking work, and employers are forced to be more cautious about adding to their payroll, it may mean there are some jobs simply not getting done. Backlogs and gaps create a ripple effect across the economy.
Economic development and employment/workforce officials must focus less on the unemployment number and more on how to expand and diversify Ohio’s economy in a way that makes people feel it is worth rejoining the workforce.
THAT will be something to celebrate.
