Christa Pike “may never recover” from a botched execution attempt, according to her attorney.
Stephen Ferrell, part of the 50-year-old’s legal team, spoke to Jake Tapper during a Sunday, Oct. 4 appearance on CNN’s State of the Union.
“We don’t really know the prognosis yet and may not know for several days,” he said, sharing that he has not met with Pike since she was hospitalized.
Ferrell added that she is on a ventilator and “critically ill.”
“It remains to be seen what the future is,” he continued. “I think one of the main things that will leave this up in the air for a while is the fact that we don’t know what the prognosis is — as in, the long-term prognosis. If she recovers — she may not fully recover.”
“And there may be issues about her competence. We just don’t know any of this,” he said.
The death row inmate survived an execution attempt on Wednesday, Sept. 30. After Pike was given two doses of pentobarbital, she reportedly became unconscious but kept breathing.
Ferrell said that the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office has “not given us any indication as to what their intentions will be.”
The attorney added that Pike should receive a life sentence instead of a death sentence “at the very least,” as he believes she has “endured a torturous attempt at executing her.”
Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has stopped all executions in the state for the rest of 2026 and ordered a “comprehensive, third-party review to determine exactly what occurred,” according to People.
