Six known players have elected minor league free agency in the past three days. While Major League free agents hit the open market five days after the end of the World Series, these eligible minor leaguers finished the season on outright assignments, so they’re able to get a head start on free agency. For further reference, these free agent decisions are all listed on the official MLB.com or MiLB.com transactions pages.
Pitchers
Jason Alexander (Astros)
The 33-year-old Alexander got recalled and optioned three separate times early in the season and eventually spent most of it with Triple-A Sugar Land. He had a 5.26 ERA in 87 1/3 innings there with a middling 18.5% strikeout rate. He did throw six scoreless innings for Houston on May 19th, but he allowed 19 earned runs in his other 12 1/3 innings this year. The Astros designated him for assignment in late September. Alexander has a 47.5% ground ball rate in parts of three seasons in the Majors, so he’ll latch on somewhere as a depth option.
Tanner Rainey (Tigers)
Formerly a staple of the Nationals’ bullpen, Rainey only tossed seven big league frames for the Tigers this year. He pitched 47 2/3 innings for Triple-A Toledo and was serviceable there, posting a 3.40 ERA with a 32.7% strikeout rate. Walks have been a problem throughout his career, and this year was no exception, as Rainey gave out free passes at a 14.1% clip in Toledo. Detroit designated him for assignment on August 31st and outrighted him two days later.
Corbin Martin (Cubs)
Martin joined the Cubs on a minor league deal in January. He was selected in mid-April but only appeared in seven games before getting DFA’d on May 7th. Working around three minor league IL stints, Martin pitched 24 ineffective innings for the Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate in Iowa, delivering an ERA over 6.00 and a walk rate of 16.7%. He typically posts ground ball rates in the low to mid-40s in the upper minors.
Outfielders
Will Benson (Reds)
Benson, 28, opened the season on the Reds’ active roster and stuck around in a part-time role through the middle of June. Over 114 plate appearances, he walked 14.0% of the time but struck out at a 33.3% clip that matched his career rate. Benson put up a 128 wRC+ in 2023 but hasn’t done anything near that since. He was outrighted to Triple-A Louisville on July 8th and batted .205/.295/.312 at that level overall.
Drew Waters (Royals)
Of the hitters on this list, Waters is the only one who did not appear in the Majors this year. He was a bit below average for Triple-A Omaha, batting .262/.323/.446 with 14 home runs and 21 stolen bases. Waters has an 84 wRC+ in 684 big league plate appearances from 2022-25. He’s a serviceable defender at the corner outfield spots but less so in center.
Infielders
Jonah Bride (Rangers)
Bride was released from Triple-A Round Rock in July, re-signed on a new minor league deal, and got selected for two games in August before getting DFA’d and outrighted. Bride put up a 125 wRC+ for the Marlins in 2024, but like Benson, he hasn’t done anything since. He got on base over 40% of the time with Round Rock, though, so it’s plausible that he’ll picked up as depth.
