Could you go a week without driving? A Rochester nonprofit thinks you can — and says it could save you money ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A local nonprofit is asking Rochester residents to try going a week without driving and consider other ways to get around town.

Reconnect Rochester is encouraging people to walk, bike or take public transit as part of its “A Week without Driving” event happening from October 1-8. News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski spoke with the group about why rising gas prices may have some residents thinking about making a change.

Cutting back on costs

“Transportation costs are the number two biggest expense in any given household behind the household itself. So we want to do anything we can to give people options to make sure that they don’t have to own a car if they don’t want to,” Goodman said.

According to AAA, gas in Rochester is currently $4.42 per gallon, which is more than $1.20 higher than a year ago.

Goodman says Reconnect Rochester is not trying to eliminate cars, but wants to highlight other ways to get around the city and save money.

“Gas prices have gone up tremendously, but it’s also repairs. It’s insurance and AAA estimates owning a new car at about $12,000 a year. So there’s so many good reasons to reduce your driving to save money,” Goodman said.

Bicyclists support

This is the second year of the event. Goodman says last year, 44 participants logged more than 2,000 non-driving miles. Local bicyclist Hendrik De Smidt said he hopes the challenge inspires more people to try new ways of getting around.

“Challenge yourself to say, what trips can I take without a car? And it won’t be everything, right? If you got to go out to Victor, you got one option, right? But not every trip is from the city to Victor,” De Smidt said.

Anyone can participate in “A Week without Driving” without signing up. Registration on Reconnect Rochester’s website simply provides extra challenges and information to help during the week.
